A Healthy Nervous System Contributes To A Healthy Body

by Dr. Brett L. Lukert, DC

How does a healthy nervous system relate to optimal health? To answer this question, we must first understand what the nervous system is and how it affects the rest of the body. The nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord and is responsible for governing and regulating every function in the body. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae of the spine. Originating from the spinal cord are spinal nerves that exit the spine between each vertebra and innervate every organ, tissue and cell in the body. Since each organ and individual system (such as the respiratory, endocrine and reproductive) is regulated by the nervous system, it is so important for the nervous system to be functioning at its highest capacity.

Restoring an optimal functioning nervous system is the primary objective of chiropractic. This is accomplished by first finding misalignments of the vertebra (called subluxations) and then correcting them through a series of chiropractic adjustments. When a vertebra is misaligned, it becomes dysfunctional. This means it loses its normal mobility and often irritates the spinal nerves, which can then cause various symptoms. The adjustments, in combination with rehabilitative exercises and lifestyle modifications, are how spinal corrections are made and maintained. This correction restores normal mobility to the joints, removes irritation from spinal nerves, and allows the nervous system to function at its maximum potential. This is why it is called natural healing.

Lifestyle and environmental factors that help keep the spine and nervous system healthy include maintaining ideal weight, flexibility and strength. This can be accomplished through an appropriate nutritional and fitness plan. Emphasizing proper posture and biomechanics while at work will also minimize the stress in the spine and reduce the chances of injury. If we take care of our bodies, they will take care of us. Our spines are designed to last a hundred years, but if we abuse and neglect them, they will wear out much sooner. Making health a priority gives ourselves the best chance to be healthy, live healthy and stay healthy!
